Thomas Seel is Professor at the Department Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering at the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. His research activities are dedicated to the development of new methods for dynamic inference and learning in a large range of applications that require online adaptation and decision making in real time. By exploiting synergies between machine learning and systems & control theory, he aims to provide hybrid methods that overcome trade-offs between agility and accuracy on the one hand and resilience and explainability on the other hand.

Thomas Seel studied Engineering Cybernetics at OvGU Magdeburg in Germany, spent a year abroad at UCSB in California, and completed an internship as well as the diploma thesis at Linde Engineering in Munich, Germany. He joined Prof. Jörg Raisch's group at TU Berlin in 2010, established the group's research focuses Dynamic Learning & Control and Intelligent Sensor Networks while teaching at TU Berlin and TAU Istanbul. In 2015 he received a PhD from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of TU Berlin. He was appointed full professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg in 2021.
